QNX Integrates DSP/BIOS Link from Texas Instruments to Optimize Mission-Critical Embedded Applications

OTTAWA, December 2, 2003 - - QNX Software Systems today announced it has adopted the DSP/BIOSTM Link technology from Texas Instruments to integrate and redistribute with the QNX® Neutrino® real-time operating system (RTOS). The arrangement will allow QNX to take advantage of the high-performance, low power consumption capabilities of Texas Instruments' dual-core OMAPTM platform for multimedia-enhanced devices. The first implementation runs on the OMAP5910 applications processor available in volume production today.

"By porting DSP/BIOS Link to the QNX Neutrino RTOS, QNX Software Systems significantly optimizes application performance by directly mapping tasks to the appropriate processor target," said Kush Parikh, OMAP strategic marketing manager, TI. "The result is tighter integration between the ARM, the TMS320C55xTM DSP, and the QNX operating system, creating a platform powerful enough to handle highly complex and advanced processes, especially in applications such as in-cab telematics and portable medical devices."

QNX will integrate DSP/BIOS Link into the QNX Neutrino multimedia framework, which supports graphics- and content-rich applications. The QNX Neutrino RTOS will reside on the ARM core of the OMAP platform and use DSP/BIOS Link to offload specific tasks such as multimedia to the DSP. Developers can boost overall application performance on OMAP through the low power, real-time signal processing capabilities of a DSP coupled with the command and control functionality of an ARM processor. The OMAP5910 processor is a dual-core processor that combines a TMS320C55x DSP core and TI-enhanced ARM925 processor and is optimized for embedded and connected applications such as Internet appliances, web pads, telematics systems, private radios, medical devices and others.

Andrew Poliak, strategic alliances business manager, QNX Software Systems, noted, "With the combination of DSP/BIOS Link and the QNX Neutrino RTOS, developers now have a foundation for harnessing the full capabilities of the OMAP platform to perform even more advanced functions such as multimedia."
